Which Has More Density — Liquid Or Solid?

Which substance, solids or liquids, possesses a greater density? The density of solids exceeds that of liquids due to the more tightly packed arrangement of particles within a solid, resulting in minimal intermolecular gaps. In contrast, liquids have more pronounced intermolecular spaces, contributing to their lower density. This difference in density arises from the distinct molecular structures and arrangements characteristic of these two states of matter. Solids exhibit a denser, closely packed structure, while liquids are characterized by a looser, more fluid arrangement of molecules, which accounts for their comparatively lower density.

What Is The Density Of Solid Or Liquid Water?

What is the density of solid or liquid water? The density of a substance is determined by the number of its molecules in a given volume. In the case of water, the density varies between its solid and liquid states. When there are fewer H2O molecules in a specific volume of water, the mass is lighter, which results in a lower density. For instance, solid ice has a density of approximately 0.92 grams per milliliter (g/mL), while liquid water has a slightly higher density of around 1.0 g/mL. This distinction in density is the reason why ice tends to float on the surface of liquid water, as it is less dense than its liquid counterpart.

Solids have a high density. In liquids, the particles can move around more freely, so they slide over each other with some gaps between them. Liquids typically have a lower density than solids. In gases the particles are far apart, moving quickly in random directions with a lot of empty space between them. The density of solids is higher than that of liquids because the particles are more compactly arranged in a solid with very less intermolecular spaces between them. In liquids, these intermolecular spaces are more and hence they are less dense. The fewer molecules of H2O there are in a volume of water, the lighter the mass will be therefore decreasing the density. As a result, it makes sense that ice has a density of . 92 g/mL while liquid water has a density of 1.0 g/mL. This also explains why ice floats in liquid water.
